How it’s built. Active physicians per 1,000 population, per NUTS 2 region (region-equivalent), OECD's own Regional Statistics database (DSD_REG_HEALTH@DF_CARE, MEASURE=DOC, UNIT_MEASURE=10P3HB), 2023 — the newest year with stable coverage across Italy and this map's other 'Italy vs elsewhere' focus countries (Spain, France, Portugal, Greece) before Italy drops out entirely in 2024. Boundaries: github.com/eurostat/Nuts2json, 2021 typology, reused from scripts/etl/eurostat.py rather than re-fetched — confirmed again for this dataflow: all 21 Italian NUTS 2 codes match exactly. A capital-region concentration is visible in the shipped values (Athens, Prague and Bucharest's regions are the top three) — physicians typically register at the hospital or clinic they practise at, which clusters in capitals, regardless of where their patients actually live; a known feature of this kind of registration data, not a data error.
