Arquata del Tronto is one of sixteen comuni in this position. Fifteen are in the belt destroyed by the 2016 Central Italy earthquake; the sixteenth, Gibellina, was destroyed in 1968. Arquata del Tronto is in seismic zone 1. Of the four zones, zone 1 is the highest hazard and zone 4 the lowest. The Department of Civil Protection describes zone 1 as the highest-hazard zone, where strong earthquakes are likely over the long run.
